Red Dress Run raises money for sick children
Zürich, 28 July 2015. For the first time at such a big scale, the local Hash House Harriers is organising on August 22, 2015 the Red Dress Charity Run. What started in 1988 in San Diego, California as a running tribute to “the Lady In Red” and her strength and determination* has in the meantime become a worldwide charity event. Organised annually, the Red Dress Run has been very successful in raising millions of dollars for a variety of causes.
The Zürich chosen charity is Stiftung Theodora - the “Giggle Doctors”. The run registration fees will be donated to the clowns that bring smiles to the faces of children in hospitals, hospices and specialised care centres across Switzerland.
The Giggle Doctors are professional performers, highly trained to work both in the medical environment and with children with disabilities. They come from a wide range of backgrounds and bring a variety of skills: actors, entertainers, magicians, musicians and singers.
Anyone can join the run and everyone is welcome, with one condition: whether you are a man or a woman, tall, short, thin or curvy, you MUST wear a red dress or skirt. High heels are optional. ☺

About the Hash House Harriers: The Hash House Harriers (abbreviated HHH or simply H3) is an international group of non-competitive running social clubs. A running event organised the club is known as a hash, with participants calling themselves hashers or hares and hounds. Hashing originated in December 1938 in Selayang Quarry, Malaysia, when a group of British colonial officers and expatriates began meeting on Monday evenings to run, in a fashion patterned after the traditional British "hare and hounds", to rid themselves of the excesses of the previous weekend. The objectives of the Hash House Harriers as recorded on the club registration card dated 1950, are:
• To promote physical fitness among our members
• To get rid of weekend hangovers
• To acquire a good thirst and to satisfy it in beer
• To persuade the older members that they are not as old as they feel
*In August 1987, a young lady wearing a red dress emerged from an airplane that had landed in southern California to visit a friend. The friend took her along to meet an eccentric running group called the “Hash House Harriers.” One member, noting her gender and attire, urged that she “just wait in the truck” until her host returned. Instead, she ran the entire trail wearing her red dress and high-heels. The following year (August 12, 1988), to commemorate the event, the San Diego Hash House Harriers sent “The Lady In Red” an airline ticket to attend the inaugural Red Dress Run. Hundreds of male and female hashers adorned themselves in red dresses for a spectacle widely covered by California newspapers and TV news. In addressing the crowd, The Lady In Red suggested that Hash House Harriers hold the Red Dress Run annually as an occasion to raise funds for local charities.
