Question about lunch allowances

samedi 1 août 2015

Hi all

I've read all about it here and I understand that if a company is offering a meal allowance then it really depends on what the employer has agreed with the taxman whether it is tax free or not.

I have an offer and 2% of the salary I was told turns out to be a lunch allowance. Now this can be one of 2 things:

1) If it's tax free that's awesome because I get more cash.
2) If it's not tax free then I basically gain nothing. On the contrary if I get a 5% bonus/raise then this amount will not be considered so it's worse. It would be better to get it all as salary.

My question is: for those of you with meal allowances in your contract, is it tax free or not?

To me this just seems like an easy way to save money in the future by cutting an allowance instead of reducing your salary which looks worse.
