I wanted to share some positive experiences of Swiss neighbours for a change :)
I admit I had some apprehension moving to Canton Schwyz as a single Chinese-looking girl. But those fears have been so unfounded and I have been taken aback by how welcoming my (wider) community has been in just the past 4 weeks.
1. On Day One straight after I moved I popped to the local restaurant for a drink and to watch the sunset after a long day moving furniture, upon which I got talking to the waitress (I apologised for asking her for a drink in the direct, German way rather than the polite, Swiss way ;)). As we got talking, she soon realised I wasn't a stray tourist and indeed we shared a landlady. And on hearing I was a new resident on my own, the table of 4 next door immediately invited me to join them for drinks, chatting for a good three hours before we headed home and would not let me pay despite my insistence. The waitress now greets me like an old friend every time I walk in, and the family and I are arranging dinner - which in Swiss terms means we definitely are, and just need to set a date :)
2. On that landlady, loveliest Swiss lady imaginable. After giving me so much advice on the local area, I invited her to my welcome drinks, not really expecting a response. Two days later, I get a lovely "new home" card. She is of course joining.
3. Heading to the local BBQ for 1. August last night was pretty lonesome until a couple of elderly Swiss Opas invited me to join their table. Almost 4 hours of bar hopping and German chat about everything from travelling to cooking and local politics, and teaching me some schwiitzerduutsch, they insisted again on paying and giving me a lift back in the opposite direction rather than the short hop on the train. They are also coming to my Apero now, and even offered to help me with transporting supplies, as I don't drive.
So for all those who claim there is no community in Wollerau :msntongue:
