Change of Employer with no written communication - is it valid?

Hi Guys!
It may be a question for a lawyer, but I'm actually checking to see if any of you had the same experience I'm having now.
I got a phone call from my line manager last week, he told me that my division has been sold to another company so my contract will be "sold" along and I will change employer and most likely office location (inconvenient for me).
Are they allowed to do such things? I think I should have something in writing, and I also should have been asked if I agreed to the change of Employer.
I was considering asking a lawyer in fact, but I would benefit if any of you could tell me your experience :)
